Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We encourage regular maintenance on your heating and cooling system all the time, but this doesn’t simply mean annual tune-ups – it also refers to assessing your air filters. It’s an easy way to help keep your system running smoothly and increase your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it all yourself! This is the perfect time to examine your filter, as the cooler weather comes to a close and summer is on the horizon. There are several benefits to changing out your air filter, such as:

Extending the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to instigate a system failure is a dirty air filter. Excess dirt that accumulates on your filter can force your whole system to work harder than it should to keep you cool. Not only will it hamper the performance of your system, but it can impact your utility bills and cause your system to overheat.

Increasing indoor air quality
The reason for an air filter is that it grabs contaminants through your air system before it flows into your residence. As the filter gets older, the less capable it is in trapping things like dust and mold that can hurt the health and comfort of your home, which is even more critical if someone in your family suffers from allergies or asthma. With spring around the corner, pollen and mold are especially prone to be hanging around and you certainly don’t like the idea of it traveling in your indoor space. A quality, clean air filter will help you breathe easy and stay healthy during allergy season.

Examine your system or current air filter provider for guidance on how frequently you should be swapping out your filter. For the majority of the filters through Lakeside Heating & Air, we suggest an annual change with the highest MERV filter available. Not sure if it’s the right time to change your air filter?
